COMPASS, a career conference for Asians in the tech industry, was held in Silicon Valley with the goal of providing a professional, approachable, and exciting experience for attendees including speakers, sponsors, and attendees.
Process
We were brought on as adesign partner to design every aspect of the event. The challenge was to build a compelling brand for COMPASS that would capture the conference’s mission and values while ensuring consistency across various touchpoints. We collaborated closely with Leap.ai to meet tight deadlines, managing every aspect of the event design, from visual identity and marketing collateral to event space aesthetics. Our role was to create a holistic and immersive experience, driving attendee engagement and satisfaction.
We began by conceptualizing a brand that was professional yet approachable. The name “COMPASS” was chosen to symbolize the idea of "providing direction" for one's career, and the acronym was crafted to stand for "COMmunicate and PASS on career insights." This foundational idea was reflected in all branding elements, from logo design to marketing materials, ensuring a cohesive message throughout the event.
To ensure the branding resonated with the target audience, we conducted extensive research. By analyzing other tech and career conferences, we gathered insights into what worked and what didn’t. We built mood boards and explored various design directions, ultimately aligning with the conference’s vision of a career-focused, growth-oriented event. This research informed the design of marketing collateral and event visuals, ensuring that they aligned with the audience's expectations.
We developed four distinct logo concepts, each representing COMPASS's mission. After multiple iterations, we selected a wordmark that used stylized cuts in the letters "C" and "S" to symbolize direction and movement. The color palette was carefully chosen to balance professionalism and energy, featuring navy blue as the base with red and orange as accents. Later, we added green to represent growth and development, reflecting the core themes of the conference.
To manage the conference information, we created a dynamic website using Wix, chosen for its flexibility and ease of use. The website showcased key details like the agenda, speaker bios, and ticketing options, allowing for last-minute changes without requiring engineering support. This, along with an integrated Eventbrite page for ticket distribution, made it easy for attendees to stay informed while simplifying backend management for the organizers.
With branding finalized, we turned our attention to the event’s visual experience. Our design team developed a range of materials, including badges, banners, posters, and T-shirts, all designed to maintain brand consistency. Using our color hierarchy, we ensured that every piece of collateral tied back to the brand's core visual identity. These elements helped reinforce the conference’s message and provided a cohesive visual experience for attendees.
The Santa Clara Convention Center served as the venue for the conference, offering multiple event spaces. We conducted site visits to familiarize ourselves with the layout and identify how best to implement the visual system throughout the space. From signage to directional cues, we designed a seamless attendee experience that guided participants smoothly through the venue, ensuring ease of navigation and enhancing the overall experience.
To enhance the event's engagement factor, we went beyond the basics. We created a brochure that included the agenda, sponsor details, and speaker bios, providing attendees with all the information they needed at their fingertips. Additionally, we designed and hand-painted career-themed props for attendees to interact with, adding a fun, interactive element to the event that contributed to its overall success.
COMPASS 2018 came together in just under two months, with a dedicated team of five designers working tirelessly to deliver exceptional results. Despite the tight timeline, every detail of the event—from the logo to the event space—was meticulously planned and executed. The branding not only met but exceeded expectations, creating an immersive and memorable experience for all stakeholders involved.
The success of COMPASS was driven by the collaborative efforts of Studio Salt, Leap.ai, vendors, and community engagement. The branding and visual experience were highly praised by attendees, and post-conference surveys revealed an impressive 80% satisfaction rate. The immersive design and seamless execution made a significant impact, ensuring the event was both visually striking and highly effective in achieving its goals. COMPASS 2018 was not only a career-boosting opportunity for attendees but also a shining example of how strategic branding and thoughtful design can elevate an event’s success.
